Master Vogue photographer Irving Penn has always been known for his utterly amazing portraits, but his boundary-pushing work specifically in the beauty realm hasn't always been focused on—until now. Starting tomorrow, S.F.'s Fraenkel Gallery will celebrate Penn (who died in 2009 at age 92) with an exhibit titled Radical Beauty that features almost 30 images that span his storied six-decade career. Nudes from the '40s (which weren't shown until the '70s), images of pierced tribal men from Papua New Guinea, and fashion models with their heads obscured by canvas bags and leather footballs will all be included. The exhibit will be up until August.
When: Thursday, June 30, through Saturday, August 20
Where: Fraenkel Gallery, 49 Geary Street (at Market Street); 415-981-2661.
