Picture Top Gear's resident boffin, James May, and what do you see? Rumpled, floral-print shirts? Ill-fitting boot-cut jeans? Ghastly velvet blazers? Indeed, "Captain Slow" is no Bernard Arnault. And yet, such has not prevented him from trying his hand at fashion design (though, perhaps it should have).
For his new lad-focused BBC show, Man Lab, the TV host presented his own line of menswear at the recent Graduate Fashion Week. It's a lark, of course — but May is not without purpose or ambition. He tells the Telegraph, “I woke up one morning and realised that one of the problems with being a middle-aged man — of being a man in general — is the tyranny of fashion. I can’t stand the need to be fashionable. I know this will come as something of a surprise to you, but I spend a great deal of money on clothes, and I just make them look really sh**." Indeed, James, indeed.

Attempting to completely revolutionize the fashion world (or bring an end to fashion), May worked with students to revamp a standby familiar to anyone whose idea of fun is an afternoon in the garage: boilersuits. But these are no mere boilersuits. These are runway-ready, modular, formal boilersuits you could wear to a funeral. Rather ingenious, if a bit naff.
So, will you advise your man to chuck his wardrobe in favor of one of May's designs? Wait, no. You don't have to answer that.
