For His Next Trick, Jay-Z Will Write The Great Gatsby Score

What can't Hova do, right? We don't exactly know how to feel about this, but, yes, word is that Jay-Z will be putting together the score for the much-anticipated, DiCaprio-led The Great Gatsby. Indeed, it was confirmed by Jay's collaborator on the project, producer The Bullitts, who tweeted, "Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!"
Crazy as it sounds, this move is not all that unexpected. First off, Jay-Z provided the track "No Church In The Wild" for the second Gatsby trailer. Secondly, Baz Luhrmann is directing the picture and if you know anything about his particular style of overwrought, hyper-saturated, poppy cinema, then you know that this is so just like him.

Moreover, Gatsby is a tale of financial and stylistic excess, something Jay-Z knows pretty darn well. Also, he's managed to expand his abilities with each new task he takes on — though, much of the music he creates for the film may have hip-hop inflections, we wouldn't be surprised if a great deal of it was more conventional.
Now, to those of us who appreciate the original book as the classic, understated slow burn it is, this is not good news. Then again, us literary snobs knew we'd lost the second we heard Luhrmann was attached to the project. At least we'll all have a banging soundtrack to match all the crazy, glittering visuals that we're sure (and dying!) to see. (Dual Show)
