Coachella Lessons: Jenny Lewis Cools Off With Patron, Avoids Porta Potties

IMG_9487
Because we couldn't (wouldn't!) leave you hanging without reporting back on at least something fun from weekend deux of desert fest fabulosity, we scouted out the best fete in Indio. Madewell's bash at the ACE was where it was at last Saturday — and not just because we're always in the mood for their casually cool threads. More accurately, it was because our girl crush of all girl crushes, Jenny Lewis, was playing co-hostess.
The brand's embarking on a 14-city Denim Road Trip in a vintage '70s airstream, hoping to outfit every girl from Ohio to Lala in their denim duds, so it seemed totally natural that the rouge-haired retro babe would be representing. Bedecked in a crisp, white babydoll dress and Madewell accessories (natch), the crooner sat down with us to dish on how she fared on her desert adventure, and what she has coming down the pipeline.

What were your go-tos when packing for Coachella?
"I love these old JIMMY Z ads for inspiration. I mean, Ry Cooder wearing JIMMY Z — so tight! Also, I'm a huge fan of Rob Brezsny's Free Will Astrology, so I was sure to check it before I left, ha!"

Do you have any green room necessities for the desert heat? Heat survival tips?
"Patron on ice in the dressing room!"

Which of your pals played Coachella this year?

"M. Ward, Dawes, and The Watson Twins sang back-ups with The Shins (The Watson Shins!)."

Was there anyone new you really wanted to check out?

I want to say Azealia Banks, but i hope I'm not the C-word she wants to ruin!"

What were your most (and least) favorite parts of the fest?

"Arcade Fire's balls! I got stuck in the giant corral of inflatable LED balls at last year's festival. I was surrounded by hundreds of balls! Myself, Ezra Koenig, and Jenny Eliscu helped throw them into the crowd, and it was magical! Then, driving home afterward, you could still see them blinking in the back seats of cars...I'd say the only real bummer about any festival is the porta potty situation — especially if you're wearing a onesie!"

What's the most amazing vintage purchase you've made recently?
"A sweet pair of '70s Levi's 517s."

What do you have coming up next?
"Well, I'm writing songs for a new solo steez, and scoring the music for my friend's movie, so there's lots of exciting things coming up!"
