My style in six words or less:
"Simple elegance — less is more!"
The greatest style lesson I've ever learned:
"At 16, I studied opera scores in Milan, Italy — year 1949, war-torn Europe — but the Italian women were dressed beautifully in spite of the difficult economic situation. A well-cut, wool-tweed suit; low-heeled oxfords with laces in suede/leather; gloves; simple sweater; and pearls. I will never forget this look, which had never been in NYC. I came home with this and turned heads immediately."
My boldest, summer-style move:
"Lightweight, wide-legged slacks; bright, bright-colored blouse."
My constant source of style inspiration:
"I find inspiration from the young people in fashion. Their experiments in color, shapes, style, lengths, shoes, socks, and hair styles. I watch them everywhere. I love it!!"
The dressing difficulties I've had to overcome:
"I have problems in finding shoes in the colors and shapes I admire that are also comfortable!"
My first major, big-ticket style purchase:
"YSL wool coat dress — billowing sleeves and a huge, flowing skirt."
My style theme song:
"All of Cole Porter’s songs and lyrics are my theme songs. Especially 'Begin the Beguine.'”
My three favorite places to shop:
"Vintage, vintage, vintage in Paris, and Fendi."
If I were 20 years old today:
"I would not dress differently at 80 than at 20, because that is the beauty and meaning of simple elegance – and it works!"
