There seems to be a new subgenre emerging in Hollywood, featuring movies about young women suffering through quarter-life crises before finding salvation in the unlikeliest places. Think Young Adult with Charlize Theron, Girl Most Likely with Kristen Wiig, and Frances Ha with Greta Gerwig.
The latest entry into this burgeoning oeuvre is Lynn Shelton's Laggies. It stars Keira Knightley as a 28-year-old woman who panics when her boyfriend proposes to her. Impending adulthood prompts her to start hanging out with a teenaged girl, played here by Chloë Grace Moretz, who's just everywhere these days. Sleepovers, life lessons, and an affair with a hot dad (Sam Rockwell) ensue.

Laggies was a hit at this year's Sundance, where a bidding war for Shelton's latest was eventually won by A24. The production company plans to release the film on September 28. While the cult success of her previous efforts Your Sister's Sister and Touchy Feely have made Shelton something of an icon for the hipster set, Laggies looks like it might finally be the movie that wins her a bigger audience.
