There are certain beauty faux pas we actually kind of love to commit, regardless of what the "rules" say. These include cutting our own hair, redheads in red lipstick, and pairing a bold mouth with an equally loud smoky eye. But, our favorite? Matching our makeup to our outfits. It turns out, we're not alone in our color-coordination adoration. Both Coco Rocha and Kendall Jenner showed they're into it at Wednesday night's amfAR Gala in New York City.
The ladies opted for takes on red lipstick — an easy starting place for anyone going for the matchy-matchy look. Kendall went full-on siren: She paired a bright, reddish-orange dress with vibrant lips. (For a similar hue, give Estée Lauder Sculpting Shine Lipstick in Surreal Sun a whirl.) Coco's red was more burgundy, to match her wine-colored dress. To recreate it, her makeup artist Veronica Chu suggests mixing CoverGirl LipPerfection Lipliner in Sophisticated with the brand's Colorlicious Lipstick in Tempt Berry.

While matchy-matchy can definitely feel dated, when done correctly, it reads sophisticated and sleek. "When matching your lipstick to your outfit, first decide if you want to go with a shade that is complementary, or an exact match," Chu says. "Next, look at the undertone of the lipstick and of your outfit to ensure it's a match — if your lipstick has a slightly cooler or warmer undertone, your match won't be as perfect."
Chu says your complexion plays a role, too. "It's also important to consider the undertone of your skin. For a flawless look, try to match cool lipsticks with cool skin tones and warm lipsticks with warm skin tones."
We don't know about you, but that sounds like permission to pick up new clothes and a new lipstick or three. Tell us: Are you a fan of this look?
