Landon, Help! How Do I Make My Boyfriend’s Clothing Work For Me?

Julie writes: I woke up at my boyfriend's place this morning and realized it was pouring rain and the sundress I had come in was going to be wildly inappropriate for work. What can I borrow from him that won't make me look like I'm playing dress-up? If you happen to be smaller than your man, which is what this sounds like, it's hard to walk out the door without looking like a human pillowcase. Unless you've both got a penchant for unisex clothing (in that case, lucky couple), it might be hard to make it work. But, it's not impossible. So, if you find yourself stretching your 15-minute morning cuddle session and have to Plan B(oyfriend) your outfit in a flash, start by staying away from the impossibles: pants and shoes. It's more likely that everything but those two are going to fit. Stick with T-shirts, button-downs, and hats. The next thing you need to realize is that this is a great opportunity for a DIY moment. Instead of trying to find the smallest thing in his closet and pretending it fits, go the other direction. Take stock of anything that's baggy or oversized and spend a couple minutes in front of the mirror just playing with it. A tuck of a T-shirt can take a second and wrapping an oversized oxford around you creates a fun new shape. Thanks to brands like Céline, Jil Sander, and The Row, frame-swallowing coats are actually quite chic. This shirt from Les Hommes is technically for a guy, sure, but if you're wanting a little cuffing practice (or the perfect piece for a rainy day) before the next time you find yourself in one of those morning-after crises, let this minimal colorblocked number be your first rehearsal. It's chic, unisex-ish, and primed for tying around your waist à la Alexander Wang if all else fails. Here's hoping your man has as good of taste as you — and don't forget to return his shirt when you're done. I hope this helps. See you next Saturday. P.S.: And if you're with someone with more feminine tastes than you (whether it's a man or a woman), we'll address that situation in an upcoming post!
