For women with red hair and fair skin, donning bright makeup can be pretty daunting. Not so fast, says makeup artist Vanessa Scali, noting that said fear ought to be confounded. For proof, look no further than Scali's work on Christina Hendricks, whose perfect visage serves as evidence. (From an outsider's perspective, it looks like Hendricks has never met a bold lipstick she didn't look good in.)
"Redheads can rock a wide range of colors and often have an advantage," Scali says. "Even just a simple pink lip can look really fresh and unexpected on a redhead."

To balance out a bold makeup look on someone with a similar porcelain complexion, Scali recommends avoiding blush and lipstick with heavy blue undertones. "Blue occurs naturally in any skin tone, particularly under the eyes, but it's especially prominent in redheads," she says. However, she notes that blue eyeshadow or eyeliner will work really well on redheads: "It just requires a very clean, precise application."
While Scali notes that are no set rules when it comes to redhead makeup, she says that she definitely has some go-to colors and textures for Hendricks. She leans towards cream-based eye makeup and blush, and says she loves Make Up For Ever's HD Cream Blush in 210, a cool pink. "It's a fabulous long-wear formula that goes on effortlessly and brightens the cheeks with creamy, translucent color." For eye makeup, she likes purples such as Chanel's Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadow in Illusoire #83, and taupes like RMS Beauty's Cream Eye Shadow in Magnetic.
Perhaps most importantly, skin like Hendricks' requires all-the-time sun protection. Putting makeup over sunscreen is no easy task, but Scali says that there are some great lightweight, sheer formulas she relies on, including Chanel's UV Essentiel and Skinceuticals' Physical Fusion UV Defense.
The big takeaway here? Pale, redheaded women can wear just about color they want to — it's just a matter of finding the right hue, and being a little bit fearless.
