Ever since the #nomakeup selfie made an appearance on Instagram and #wokeuplikethis became everybody's new catchphrase, we've been wondering how these hashtags would impact real women in their lives. How challenging is it for an everyday makeup wearer to go cosmetics-free, and would she find it to actually be empowering or just a pain? So, when we heard that Indiana University student Annie Garau was embarking on a makeup-free project for an entire year, we silently cheered.
Fed up with how much of her life was devoted to worrying about her looks, Garau decided to trade in her lipstick, mascara, and foundation for a bare face. Now, more than halfway through the experiment, she's learning what it's like to not stress over her appearance daily and is embracing her superficial "flaws."
