AraabMuzik, Flosstradamus, Teen Girl Fantasy, Nick Hook: August 20, FREE
Red Bull Music Academy and SummerStage have teamed for a showcase in East River Park featuring an impressively stacked electronic lineup. Headliner AraabMuzik’s superhuman MPC skills have to be seen to be believed, while supporting DJs Flosstradamus, genre-spanning house duo Teengirl Fantasy, and Red Bull Music Academy Graduate Nick Hook are all can’t-miss live acts in their own right.
Monday, August 20, 6p.m., East River Park (Montgomery Street to East 12th Street & FDR Drive); No Phone.
Sebadoh, Circle of Buzzards, Sentridoh: August 22, $20
While not technically a reunion show (they've been playing on and off together since the mid '80s), there’s still something special about seeing Sebadoh live. Fronted by Dinosaur Jr.’s Lou Barlow, the band ranges from tightly wound indie to noisy lo-fi, and managed to define slacker guitar rock over their 25+ years together.
Wednesday, August 22, 7:30 p.m. Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey Street (between Bowery and Chrystie); 212-533-2111.
Afro-Punk Festival: TV on the Radio, Erykah Badu, Gym Class Heroes, Janelle Monae, Skindred, Toro y Moi, Reggie Watts, Spank Rock, NinjaSonik, The Memorials, Bad Rabbits, Gordon Voidwell, The London Souls, Cerebral Ballzy, Phony PPL, Das Racist, Body Language: August 25 and 26, The Bowery Ballroom, FREE
While last summer’s Afro-Punk festival had to be canceled due to Hurricane Irene, the event is making a strong comeback with artists including Erykah Badu and TV on the Radio. Along with the music you get food trucks, skateboarding, and great artwork – and best of all it’s free.
August 25 and 26, 12 p.m. Commodore Barry Park, Nassau St & Navy St, Brooklyn, 11201; No Phone
