We weren't surprised there was a colossal crowd waiting outside the downtown venue of Rachel Comey's fall/winter show last night. The designer has a lot of fans (us included). And even if we didn't have a seat, we would have gladly joined her ever-expanding entourage filling the perimeter of the space in anticipation of her latest collection. And standing or sitting, it was all worth it, as it was possibly Comey's most ambitious and thoughtful collection yet. There were all the signature prints and florals (we loved the many fall dresses with hems cleverly knotted in the front), as well as Comey's unorthodox layering of patterns, textures, and varied proportions. These are clothes that are consistently joyful, but this season, there was even more merriment, thanks to the sometimes hilarious spoken-word track from comedian/performance artist, Heather Lawless. Even if parts made us laugh out loud (which they did), nothing distracted from such a thorough and rich collection. And what of those leopard boots? A risk, but if Comey can go there, we will, too.
