Raf Simons Will Be Dior’s Newest Artistic Director

The NYT just confirmed that Raf Simons will be Dior's new artistic director, filling a year-long empty seat that John Galliano left open after he was fired for making anti-Semitic remarks.
Raf Simons was fired from Jil Sander earlier this year to make room for the return of the house's original founder, and we were hopeful that he would take this opportunity to start his own eponymous label. The designer's takeover of Dior seems rather at odds with his aesthetic; Raf was responsible for reviving the minimalist Jil Sander brand and championing the pared-down, boxy, androgynous look that is the complete opposite of the cinched, girlish Dior sensibilities.

While we're happy that these two stories — Dior's lack of a designer and Raf's unemployment — are finally resolved, it still seems like an odd match-up. What do you think? Will Raf take Dior into a new, positive direction, or is this a coupling that's doomed to fail? (NYT)
