Instead of the cash-draining couture circus that is the Western-style red carpet, the Chinese build up buzz around what celebrities wear in an entirely different way. While we're used to every minor detail about clothing, accessories, hair, and makeup being broadcast and dissected before, during, and after the ceremonies, Chinese red carpet culture never reveals the designers.
They leave scrupulous bloggers and Internet commenters to try and battle it out to figure out what each person wore, and how they looked. If the general consensus is positive, a press release might go out naming the brands of the dress, jewelry, or accessories. If not, both celebrity and brand get shamed out of the limelight.
