It's tricky putting together an outfit for a night on the town here in S.F. You don't want to dress up too much — we're just not that kind of city — but workaday casual is simply not acceptable when you're off to Chambers Eat + Drink or (lucky you) someplace even chicer. Nights out are supposed to be special, right? Luckily, our own San Francisco editor, Angela Tafoya, has perfected this balancing act and knows just what to wear for our local aesthetic, the finicky temperatures, those steep hills. Read on, San Franciscans.
"I’m pretty no muss, no fuss when it comes to prepping for a night out. In fact, I’m always the first of my friends to be ready (under 15 minutes!) and usually can be found at a neighborhood watering hole versus a club or lounge. So, when I head out the door I like to keep things simple — I’m a creature of comfort! When hitting the town I usually opt for casual but edgy threads, items that are semi-dressy, stylish, and that I still feel approachable and down-to-earth wearing (no towering heels, please). You can always find me trotting around in my worn-in Rachel Comeys.
I prefer to stick to one statement item and a few delicate jewelry pieces. I’m obsessed with Oakland designer Marisa Haskell’s baubles. They add just the right amount of glam and rustic elegance to any ensemble. Also, when I stumbled on this black, sleek dress, well, it was love at first sight. I adore that it’s slightly swankier than I would go for, but at the same time very relaxed. It’s from a darling little S.F. boutique called Harputs and it reminds me of a Margiela (sans the price tag!). It’s cool, because here in S.F. the “dress code” is pretty nonchalant, so wearing it with booties works. I paired it with some Loeffler Randall espadrilles here. It’s so versatile! It’s become my go-to as of late. My makeup routine is fairly easy, too. I stick to natural glosses and cat-eye liner with just a dash of mascara. I’m ready to roll! "
