My absolute favorite thing in the world is dressing to the nines: wearing theatrical colors, textures, accents, and extra voluminous dresses. Birthdays, holiday parties, and other big celebrations are the perfect excuse to do just that (and if anyone thinks your dress is too crazy you can simply reply “it’s my birthday!”). To achieve a standout, unexpected but comfortable look, I follow a few simple rules.
Choose Something Unexpected. Wear a color, style (or both) that you wouldn’t normally choose. You are dressing for a special occasion so, why not wear something special! The vibrant red and volume of the Lanvin for H&M tulle dress borders on costumey, but is so theatrical that when I wear it, I immediately feel like a ballerina/princess.

Shine With Sequins. Wear sequins! They sparkle, shine, attract attention, and have the extra special pizzazz feeling to them. Sequins alone create a bold statement so accessorizing isn’t a must, but again it’s your choice how crazy you want to go! If you are concerned with being too over the top, choose a neutral color like the white long sleeved dress, or the black with gold accents.
Pay Attention To Details. Choose a dress with a more basic silhouette or color that has great detailing. (Examples: black, silk short cocktail dress with ruching and '80s-style bow on the hip, black cotton sleeveless dress). Although black is a typical choice for most ladies, the ruching, bow, and lace-panel embellishments add flare and the unexpected touch.
Just remember that you are dressing up for a special occasion, so HAVE FUN with it! Be colorful, sparkly, and wear something that makes you smile!
Hope this helps,
