Shop: Prairie Collective
Location: 262 Divisadero Street (between Hayes and Page streets); 415-701-8701.
Flower Power: Part flower shop, part jewelry and home boutique, this
darling place on Divisadero goes by the motto “we like it wild” when it
comes to stems. The natural, slightly undone arrangements include lavender, ranunculus, anemones, poppies, and the like, stuffed into mason and apothecary jars or wooden boxes, adding up to a just-picked-from-my-ridiculously-awesome-garden feel.
Price: The tiniest arrangements start at just $15. However, a $60 order is required for delivery.
Shop: Birch
Location: 564 Hayes Street (between Laguna and Octavia streets); 415-626-6860.
Flower Power: The only floral shop in town that has an international
fashion magazine collection so awesome it rivals the gorgeous blooms. Torryne Choate’s Birch continues to set the high-fashion boutique mood with pretty, atmospheric lighting, a sweet indie soundtrack, and displays that are at the same time lush and minimalist. Think: neon pin-cushions and thick, plum-hued tulips tucked inside large black or white cylinders. No wonder Kate Moss, Alexander Wang, Andy Spade, and dozens of others have called in orders.
Price: They charge by the stem, with most springtime flowers setting
you back $1.50 to $3 per, while the fanciest varieties can soar up to
$9 to $12 a flower.
Shop: Flora Grubb
Location: 1634 Jerrold Avenue (between 3rd and Phelps streets); 415-648-2670.
Flower Power: This local goddess of green (with a helluva convenient
name) runs a sprawling nursery in Bayview that sells everything from
the biggest potted palms to the tiniest, low-maintenance air plants.
While the shop now has a custom order unit, dubbed The Cutting Garden,
it’s really an ideal place for a guy or gal who is into building a DIY
arrangement or taking home an unconventional plant, such as the
oreocereus celsii cacti, which resembles a little old man with long
shaggy gray hair. Warning: come in a car, not MUNI.
Price: Custom tabletop bouquets start around $100. DIY succulent
square kits at $75.
