This Is Our Jam Premieres: Carter Tanton, “Horrorscope” [VIDEO]

Earlier this year we featured Carter Tanton’s “Murderous Joy,” the first single from his upcoming solo record Freeclouds. The track saw Carter Tanton both cautious and hopeful, singing Americana-indebted folk in the vein of nostalgia-soaked acts like Cass McCombs and Uncle Tupelo. With “Horrorscope” and the accompanying video, Tanton trades his sepia-toned croon for ‘60s garage, and embodies the sound with just as much passion. “Horrorscope” is louder and noisier than the other band Tanton plays in, Lower Dens, and his previous project, Tulsa. The song merges Beach Boys melody with waves of guitar noise, allowing Tanton to let loose with a force that would never have been possible at lower decibels. The eerily kaleidoscopic (possibly "horrorscopic") video, directed by Jhny Stvns, combines film negatives, a seance, and found imagery in a dark collage that perfectly embodies this more jagged-edged Carter Tanton.
