It may seem unlikely that a dude could give away a song for free out of the blue, and have it turn out be some of the prettiest music released in recent memory. But when said dude is the lead singer of Fleet Foxes, the veritable kings of pastoral indie rock, a release like this could seem more perfunctory than impressive. However, “I’m Losing Myself” reveals itself to be an exercise in bucolic restraint that stands nicely alongside Pecknold’s other efforts. It doesn’t hurt that Pecknold sings with Ed Droste, whose band Grizzly Bear could go toe-to-toe with Fleet Foxes in a competition to see who could create the most wistfully bittersweet melody imaginable. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m feeling the sudden urge to go make a daisy chain.
