This Is Our Jam: YACHT “Utopia” / “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)”

YACHT have never taken themselves too seriously. They thrive on a celebratory weirdness that borders on frenzied ecstasy. Listening to YACHT involves leaving preconceived ideas of what is normal or goofy or cool behind; you just have to go with the flow. But there is also an aspect to YACHT that is deeper than the surface-level electro fun they facilitate so well. As naïve as it sounds, Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans want to lead their audience to a higher plane of existence. No place is this more evident than with “Utopia” / “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)”—two songs whose duality becomes a distillation of YACHT’s transcendental view of universal celebration. “Utopia” is a zany funk track with a bass-line played comically fast, to the point where you’d need superpowers to properly dance to it. “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)” is a slower electro jam that interpolates a classic-rock Master Scott & the Dynamic Three '80s tune: "We don't have no daughter, let the motherfucker burn." The below video includes both tracks. Watch as YACHT leads you through a universe filled with babies, palm trees, explosions, geometric oddities, and flying exercise equipment, only to emerge from the psychedelic cacophony with ideas about procreation, nature, feminity, and the meaning of YACHT. That, or YACHT just want to give us a really great party. Probably both.
