When we spotted this Jackson Pollock-inspired ballerina skirt by Tibi at Net-A-Porter, we had an inkling that our love for the statement skirt would continue well into 2014. What other piece can you take and, with minimal zhuzh effort, transform into full-on elegant evening wear? And, when we say minimal zhuzh, we mean it: Chances are you already own a black turtleneck, strappy heels, and bright bag, so you won't even have to hit the mall to complete this look. That's a pretty major plus, if, like us, you're looking to avoid the dead-eyed zombie hordes last-minute shoppers at the mall.
Start with the Tibi skirt, or, if playing Santa has you all tapped out, we love these more affordable versions by ASOS in oxblood jacquard or sheer-paneled, swingy black. Then, add your favorite turtleneck and heels for a holiday look that's unmistakably fancy-pants without being all red-velvet-and-lace-collar about it. As an added bonus, this look would also be pretty much the classiest way to ring in the New Year ever (say it with us now: No freakum dresses in 2014!) and could even double as your sophisticated-dinner, work-function, and art-opening go-to all year round. And, if you're the artistic type, we say go ahead and paint your minimalist, black-and-white masterpiece in this, too. We adore a skirt that works and plays hard.
