There are two stories of how the tuxedo came to be. The first involves a 22-year-old renegade who cut off the tails of his jacket when he attended the Autumn Ball at Tuxedo Park, N.Y. in 1886 (and caused a media scandal).
The other (real) story begins in 1861, when a London tailor on Savile Row constructed a tailcoat for a friend of the Prince of Wales, who wanted something less formal to wear to dinners in Tuxedo Park. What the tailor created was a shortened suit that the newly liberated man wore to a bachelor's dinner at Delmonico's in NYC. When asked why he was "out of uniform," the man responded that it was the newest "Tuxedo" fashions. Cool, right? This fall, the tuxedo turns 150 years old and will be feted around the world. (WWD)
