There are two new shows gracing Southern Cali that we can't recommend highly enough. At Gagosian Gallery, Taryn Simon (2007's An American Index Of The Hidden And Unfamiliar) has a new show that is compelling as it is strange.
Contraband
is a photographic series of 1075 photographs of items detained and seized during a 5 days at JFK. The result is a bizarre catalog of the forbidden, and you have to see some of these items to believe them. Up the road, Prism Gallery is debuting Misericordia, featuring works by Marina Abramovic, Louise Bourgeois, Chris Burden, and Terence Koh all centered on the concept of devotional love and mercy. With such highbrow players on display, we highly recommend you check it out stat.
Gagosian Gallery, 456 North Camden Drive (at Brighton Way); 310-271-9400.
