Macy’s New (Record-Setting!) Shoe Floor Has 280,000 Pairs Of Kicks

Keeping the Olympic theme going strong, Macy’s is going for gold with their upcoming debut of what's being billed as the “world’s largest” shoe floor. The mega-brand put their flagship store through a complete overhaul (for a whopping $400 million!), devoting 39,000-square-feet to women's shoes, following the trend of other NYC department stores — notably Saks and Barneys — cashing in on the mass shoe hysteria going on right now. The space now houses more heels than even the biggest footwear addict knows what to do with — we're talkin' 280,000 pairs. CEO and Chairman Terry Lundgren told WWD, "Shoes for women in particular is such an important part of the wardrobe. She can wear the same pair of shoes on multiple occasions, but you wouldn’t catch her wearing the same sportswear or dress three times a week...When you can satisfy a woman with a great pair of shoes, you can convert her to a core customer in other categories." Sneaky, sneaky!

Stealing from Selfridges, the reigning footwear champ, Macy's intends to organize the floor into zones, add extra variety to the selection (think athletic offerings and comfort brands), and introduce a brand-new luxury wing, but of course. The whole project is set for completion in early September, which doesn't give us long to finish our mammoth shoe closets to match. (WWD)
