This Is Our Jam: Korallreven, “As Young As Yesterday” Feat. Victoria Bergsman

As I type this review, the temperature in Gothenburg, Sweden is 58 degrees fahrenheit and falling. Soon the daylight hours will shrink to almost nothing, and thermometers will drop below freezing. Yet even in the dead of winter, Sweden’s music will continue to pulse with the sound of the Mediterranean Sea hundreds of miles to the south. Korallreven are a Belearic duo that sit alongside likeminded countrymen jj, Air France, The Tough Alliance, and ceo—bands who use steel drums and island rhythms to counteract the bleak cold of the north. New single, “As Young As Yesterday,” has a breezy heat that feels especially refreshing, largely due to the gorgeous vocal contributions by Taken By Trees’ Victoria Bergsman. Like her previous collaboration with Panda Bear (who is also remixing "As Young As Yesterday" for the 12" release), Bergsman's soft-but-warm singing brings a breathy intimacy to Korallreven's house rhythms, hand claps, and synths. We may barely have entered fall, but “As Young as Yesterday” feels like the harbinger of a second summer.
