Area's AW19 show made quite the impression. The New York label took houndstooth prints, tie-dye, faux fur and iridescent fabrics, and turned them into everything we want from a new season collection. The aesthetic referenced '80s extravagance while appealing to the hyperrealism of the digital age. But the most impressive part was the fresh use of diamanté detailing.
Depending on which cycle of fashion you're buying into, diamanté can either be tastefully naff or an ironic relic, reminiscent of '80s stars like Dynasty's Joan Collins. Either way, as patron of trash culture, John Waters said: "Have faith in your own bad taste."
Diamanté has slowly but surely been winning over the fashion industry. Ashley Williams' cult rhinestone hair slides from SS18 were replicated all over the high street, while Gucci's crystal net jumpsuit from AW17 undoubtedly brought diamanté to the fashion fore.
