When the soon-to-be FLOTUS stepped out at 2008's Democratic National Convention in her floral Thakoon number, it was (basically) the dress heard 'round the world. The normally arm-baring Michelle chose a more demure, muted sheath, which garnered more than her fair share of praise from the fashion industry — and shot the young designer to (even higher) fame. After she knocked it out of the park with Tuesday's Tracy Reese, we've been waiting with bated breath to see what she had up her sleeve for this next oh-so-momentous occasion.

Of course, we know that the real main event for tonight was, you know, the President's speech, but MObama's wardrobe comes in at a close second. When she walked out in that deep burgundy number, created by under-the-radar designer Laura Smalls, we're pretty sure we heard the world let out a collective gasp. (Or, at least from those of us staying home from FNO to watch). As good as her wardrobe choices have been this week, we think this is our favorite yet — and it may even beat '08's famous ensemble. The dark shade is more than flattering, and can we say enough about her arms? As always, brava, Mrs. Obama.
