Wang’s Fall ’13 Collection Makes Oversized, Gray Wool Actually Sexy

If Joan of Arc had knit herself a gray cashmere hood rather than a chain-link one, stolen the paws off bears to be worn as gloves, and then found suiting pieces to make her badass entrance in, she would have felt right at home at Alexander Wang's fall '13 show. Yes, in his latest offering Wang took a slight turn from his body-con smoke-and-mirror days of yore (don't worry, it's still somehow just what you wanted), pumping up the fabric and letting out the hemlines.

Think: Oversized coats you already want to live in, turtlenecks that don't necessarily end at the chin, boxy blue-and-black jackets that could go over everything, and yes, bear-paw gloves. There was a particularly strong destroyed-jacquard set, some angora and mohair pieces that looked so luxe they could have been fur (or were they?), and metallic low-back sweaters perfect for that chilly night dinner party.

As for the accessories, well, they sure didn't disappoint either. Well-sculpted heels cut diagonally up models' feet and mules disguised themselves in wrapped gray wool. And then there were the bags: one-handle, two-basket, pony-hair dreams that, despite their sleek design, can still be aptly considered carryalls. Given all of this, it's no surprise the show opened with a resounding "Eye Of The Tiger," and, as Wang made his signature victory lap around the intricate Cunard building stage, ended with resounding applause.
