Sandro does effortless, cool, and polished like nobody's business (well, except its business, of course). And with a new insurgence of sporty appeal for spring '13, it seems like the French line is stepping up its game once again for the new season.
Aside its masterful incorporation of boxy silhouettes, track jackets, and an amazing leathery version of basketball shorts, the spring lookbook is just one part of the brand's exciting news. With the recent opening of the fourth stand-alone store in New York — this time on Spring Street — Sandro's got a lot to celebrate. Therefore, we went to the source itself, creative director Evelyne Chétrite, to find out what makes Sandro spring '13 so special. Read on and then check out the entire collection in the slides, ahead.
What's the design philosophy behind the new spring collection?
"The Pacific destinations of Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Tokyo were the main points of inspiration for this season. Hibiscus flowers, palm leaves, and orchid plants are Sandro’s key prints this summer. Outfits play on transparency and print effects such as hologram Jacquard, metallic tweed, quilting, and lamé-coated fabric with straight cuts softening the silhouette, which is both chic and sport."
Those bigger, baggier, tapered jeans like the ones in your spring line is one of our favorite shapes of the season, but lots of women are averse to them because of its challenging shape. How do you wear yours?
"What I love about boyfriend jeans is that they are insanely comfortable while maintaining a high level of style — to pair with some strong feminine pieces for a nice contrast: a structured jacket, some great accessories, and a pair of sleepers!"
Do you think New York women have anything to learn from Parisian women?
"These are really hard questions to answer! When I go to NYC, I can feel this really positive energy, which I like a lot! The New York women have [their] own great sense of style. On the contrary, if we could learn anything [from] the New York women then that would be good — and I would be so pleased! I think travels are constructive — the change of air is good for everyone in order to get inspiration!"
What is the one piece in your closet that you end up wearing the most?
"A pair of jeans: either slim or boyfriend — depending on my mood!"
Where are the places in NY that you make sure to visit whenever you're in town?
"The MET and Barneys!"
Sandro, 150 Spring Street (between West Broadway and Wooster streets).
