We’d like to begin this post with a brief statement: We are very proud and excited by the burgeoning artisan food movement that is sweeping London. Food trucks are awesome; burgers costing £20 are so worth it, and the really, really good Mexican street food on offer just makes our heart sing. But sometimes, only sometimes, it can become a little too much. There are only so many times one can get told over the phone “we don’t do bookings.” And pop-up restaurants, whose inception and demise resembles that of a mayfly’s life expectancy, are a very little annoying.
Step forward parody Twitter handle, @Foodpit that seeks to address the balance by providing an antidote to all of the pomp and bombast currently surrounding the London food scene. The tweets centre on the mythical (though some of them we wish were real) pop-up joints and BBQ shacks with outlandish culinary claims, like Burger Realm in Chalk Farm, “Step through the door and witness an infinity of charred flesh. Brioche clouds. Mustard lakes. No escape.” Sound familiar? While we wouldn’t want wish away any of the mouthwatering foodie sensations hitting the capital, it is refreshing to read a response to the fevered proclamations each new BBQ pit receives. @Foodpit you’ve just got yourself a new follower.
