Is Bazaar‘s “Diversity” Shoot Truly Diverse?

For the much-heralded September issue, Harper’s Bazaar decided to do things a little differently. Global Fashion Director, Carine Roitfeld (y’know the one) rounded up a "unique" group of subjects for an editorial portfolio that acts as an “homage to the diversity of women,” and appears in all 29 editions of the magazine, across 45 countries. Titled "Singular Beauties," and shot by the-one-and-only Karl Lagerfeld, it features an eclectic mix of faces, including 82 year-old Carmen Dell'Orefice, plus-size model Candice Huffine, young actress Lily Collins, and the womanly Scarlett Johansson, to name a few.

Now, we do love it, but there’s a but there. The concept, we adore, but since it’s meant to be the celebration of complete female diversity, and is the creative product of styling genius Carine Roitfeld, we were sort of expecting something a little more, well, “diverse.” Sure there’s old, young, big, and little, but, is that really exploring the outer limits of diversity? Shouldn't we be looking a bit past the traditional benchmarks of non-homogenous casting these days — trying to really focus on the wide swath of beautiful women who call this country, and this planet, home?
