It's been nearly four weeks since the VMAs. We're still talking about it. "We can't stop" talking about it. And that's because our society can't stop talking about it. We're stuck in a feedback loop in which you talk about, and then we talk about it, and then you talk about us talking about it. We've lost the referent. What even happened? Was this an actual lived moment in our collective history, or is it a shared delusion, a folie à tous, if you will? Were the VMAs simply a mashup hallucination of cultural iconography, of teddy bears, The Birth of Venus, Beetlejuice? Is it only an invented trauma that we are continually sharing and reliving? We can't be sure. All we know is that Paula Patton doesn't care about Miley Cyrus grinding on her husband, Robin Thicke.
"I wasn't surprised at all," said Patton earlier this week on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live. "All my friends do it like that," she argued, referring to the twerk heard 'round the world. To prove her point, the following morning she demonstrated the selfsame dance move on the Today show's Al Roker, a weatherman.
