You probably don't need reminding, but the third season of Homeland kicks off in exactly one week. Reuniting with Brody, Carrie, Saul, and the gang is pretty much going to be the highlight of our month, because we've been missing them like crazy. But, to tide us over, we're losing ourselves in this epic Damian Lewis interview. Men's Journal just ran a profile of the British actor that makes us wish we were BFFs with Brody's alter ego IRL.
As it turns out, Lewis can get himself into all kinds of, well, situations. In the interview, he regales us with tales of everything from giving a drunken audition for Steven Spielberg to sharing laughs with Barack Obama. In fact, on his first meeting with the POTUS, he even incited a few jokes from the man himself. In response to Lewis' query about how Obama found the time to watch Homeland, he replied "Well, Damian, on Saturday afternoons, Michelle takes the girls to play tennis, and I say I'm going to the Oval Office to work, and instead I watch Homeland."
When he's not hamming it up with world leaders, Lewis is keeping busy on the show's North Carolina set and playing the same guessing game over Brody's fate as the audience. That's right — he's just as in the dark about how long Brody will last as we are. "With Brody, I feel like I'm on a stay of execution with each episode," he told the mag. "I think simply for creative and artistic reasons, the writers want to kill me...The more compromised storytelling is to keep him alive and to keep him bubbling along somehow. It's the executives who write that version." And, while most of us would be heartbroken to see him leave the show, the real life Brody is starting to get a little tired of a life away from his family (who still reside in England). It's not that he wants out, but let's just say he wouldn't be the saddest guy in the world if Brody met his maker this season.
Lewis also waxes poetic on his traditional British upbringing (including a stint at Eton, no less), his acting career before Homeland, and what it's like working with Claire Danes.
