When writer Henry Bromell won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series last night, his widow stepped up to accept the award with a brief, tearful speech. Bromell, who wrote the episode "Q&A" and was also an executive producer of the show, passed away this past March. And, while his colleagues had nothing but great things to say about him, his wife Sarah Bromell wasn't given the chance.
Luckily, Entertainment Weekly caught up with Bromell after the fact in the press room. On the subject of the winning episode, she praised her husband's work: "It contains a 20-page interrogation scene where Carrie interrogates Brody, so it was really difficult to figure out how to do that,” she explained. “When they’d finally gotten it just the way they wanted it…[it was] the turning point to that episode and a huge puzzle piece in the season.” She then added the pointed statement, "That’s what I wanted to say, by the way, had they let me say it.”
Given the many tributes given last night, it seems a little odd that the Academy would've prevented Bromell from saying her piece, and it feels even more icky that they didn't seem to have a problem letting Claire Danes give a longer tribute to the late writer while accepting her award. At least Bromell got to speak out afterward, though. From what we understand, her husband's presence was crucial to the show's success, and that legacy will undoubtedly live on.
