We love ourselves a haunting, rambling, heartbreaking music legend memoir. And nobody breaks our hearts into tiny pieces better than Morrissey. Yes, Morrissey — solo artist, former Smiths' frontman, anti-monarchist rabble-rouser, ardent vegetarian, and all-around mensch — announced this week that his first-ever memoir will be published by Penguin Classics on October 17.
The bad news? It'll only be available in the U.K. and Europe, because Morrissey has yet to ink a deal for publishing rights in the U.S.
He spent years working on the book. And as of 2011, the manuscript was up to nearly 700 pages (we imagine half of that's probably complaining about guitarist Johnny Marr). Of the book, he's said, "I'm really not that interesting, so I don't know why I've written so much."
We disagree, and so does bookseller Jon Howells, of the British bookstore Waterstones, who said, "He's a contrary, controversial character, and his is arguably the most interesting untold story yet to emerge from the '80s generation of British music heroes." Plus, there's nobody better at moping. Nobody. (The Guardian)
