Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino a.k.a. Troy Barnes, has always been something of an open book. From last year's deeply confessional Instagram posts ("I'm afraid people hate who I really am") to his secret-spewing career as a rapper, Glover makes compulsive oversharer Drake look like a vault by comparison.
So, it's no surprise that when Complex gave the 30-year-old multi-hyphenate the cover treatment, Glover held nothing back. "I don’t want young black kids to aspire to be rappers or ballers." he muses. "Even lawyers and doctors — those are service positions. I want them to be coders. They can make their own worlds then." It's a nice sentiment, but as the piece progresses, Glover turns from wide-eyed optimism to morbid introspection. "Everybody has suicidal thoughts. Everybody is on the verge of suicide every day."
But, what is Glover so bummed out about? Although his time on Community is coming to an end (he's set to appear on five of the next 24 episodes), Glover's upcoming album Because The Internet might very well catapult him to the top of the rap game. Don't believe us? Check out this recent freestyle he dropped on SiriusXM’s Sway in the Morning, a rap so prolific it's had the blogosphere buzzing ever since.
And, if Glover's candor isn't enough, much like its recent Pharrell profile, Complex has once again laid it all out for us online in a package that can be only described as beautiful. Check the whole thing out here. (Complex)
