Last week we warned you that with the fourth season of Game of Thrones inching closer and closer, breakout star Emilia Clarke was about to become more ubiquitous than snow in New York. Well, just call us Nostradamus, because it's another week, and another cover for The Mother of Dragons.
This time, Clarke graces the front page of WSJ magazine's March 2014 issue, and sits down for one of her most revealing interviews yet. But, let's start with that striking cover. The image is reminiscent of last week's V cover, in that it's also a close-up of Clarke's striking face — but that's where the similarities end. Here, she's decidedly less glammed up, sporting a windblown hairdo and a bare face.
The story, written by Brian Raftery, charts her rise through London's cutthroat Drama Center London, a school that counts Michael Fassbender and Colin Firth as alumni, and how she snagged the coveted role as Khaleesi. Prior to the fateful audition, Clarke had been in typical struggling actress mode: waitressing, catering, and telemarketing just to make ends meet. Then, after a series of auditions, Clarke flew to Los Angeles, walked into a room full of HBO executives, and proceeded to bust a move. "I did the robot, followed by the funky chicken," she tells the magazine. "I think it sealed the deal."
As for any Khaleesi-related spoilers, Clarke was predictably coy. "You start to see her struggle with the realities.”
