As far as department stores go, it doesn't get much better than Liberty of London. Just consider the bevy of new temptations found each time you step into its hallowed halls. Prefer evidence to back up our claim? Well, just allow us to present Exhibit A: Liberty's latest collaboration with Acne Studios.
The retailer opened its extensive archive of iconic prints to the cult, Swedish label's designers; a unique opportunity for the team, to say the least. As Acne creative director Jonny Johansson explains, “I’m obsessed with digging in archives and morphing elements of design history with our universe. I have
a personal and long history with Liberty prints, having used them as a source of inspiration in my early years as a designer."
This fusion is realized in a tight edit of leather pieces featuring prints from the art nouveau period. The label’s signature leather biker jackets, low-slung dungarees, sleeveless tank tops, and sunnies are all given the Liberty motif treatment to great results. "When we started exploring Liberty’s extensive heritage for this project, it almost felt like an overwhelming voyage," Johanssen adds of the creative process. "We realized we had to come up with a strong contrast in order to make sense of it, so the team and I picked one favorite print each and integrated them with some of our classic leather pieces”
The final product marries sun-kissed colors and quirky embellishments with Acne's cheeky sensibilities, in such a fitting way we can't help but wonder what took the powerhouses so long to play together. The good news is, it has finally happened and will be shoppable soon. Tide yourself over until the release by clicking through the collection right here.
