Katie Holmes: “No One Loves You Like Your Mother”

Katie Holmes is a mommy’s girl and that is not remotely a bad thing. In ELLE U.K.’s April issue, the actress, ex-fashion designer, and mom to Suri opens up about the influence her own mother has on all aspects of her life.

Now a Bobbi Brown global ambassador, Holmes developed a love of beauty pretty much when she was knee-high to a grasshopper, thanks to her glamorous mom. “I’m the youngest of five with three older sisters. So, when I was a little girl, I spent a lot of the time in the bathroom just watching them,” says Holmes. "I was intrigued by makeup, and my mom was very frank with us and said, 'There are natural beauties in the world, but makeup enhances.'" Amen to that, sister.

And, it seems that her own mother’s parenting skills have left a lasting impact on how she's raising Suri. “I think the basics are very important: The number one thing is making sure my child feels loved and good about herself,” Holmes says. “And, that what she does, and who she is, is special and important — and should be celebrated. And, my mom always said, 'No one loves you like your mother.'”

But, what about her now-defunct fashion label Holmes & Yang? Well, the interview took place before the news broke of the brand’s demise, but, again, Katie's mother’s influence resonates with her own passion for fashion. She says that her mother sews and that, "she always said, 'Your work on the inside should be just as beautiful as your work on the outside.'" Adding that, “She taught us that your outside appearance doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have depth and kindness and sincerity.” We may have a little crush on Katie Holmes and her mom right about now.
