Call it the True Detective Effect. Or, The New Girl Fallout. It can even be referred to as the Alec Baldwin Aftermath. Whatever you decide to label Hollywood's latest trend of movie stars flocking to television, know this: It's here to stay.
The traditional career trajectory for actors has long been to parlay a hit TV show into a bona fide film career. Over the last few years, however, the opposite has been true. While sequel-happy studios are taking fewer risks on original stories, television is in the midst of a golden age. The sea change hasn't been lost on movie stars, who are migrating to the small screen in record droves, with the hopes of finding a creative outlet that movies no longer guarantee. Oh, and the steady paycheck helps, too.
In the upcoming fall season alone, boldface names like Katherine Heigl, Halle Berry, and Jennifer Lopez will all try their hands at carrying their own series. While stars like Steve Buscemi, Don Cheadle, and Kevin Bacon have all found projects that befit their talents, the transition can be a lot trickier than it sounds. Because Katie, Halle, and J.Lo are all loyal readers of R29, we've created a list of dos and dont's to help them in their new journey. To all you other actors considering a move to the boob tube, feel free to read this, too. In fact, everyone read it! We're just that generous.
