TV recaps were originally created to supplement the actual program. Avid viewers would catch that week's episode of Gossip Girl or Lost or what have you, and then anxiously wait to wake up the next morning to see what their favorite critic had to say about the show's developments. You caught plot points you missed or commiserated about a totally idiotic line. And, then you waited to watch and read again next week.
But, now, there's been a major shift. Thanks to busy lives and the magic of DVR, pretty much no one is watching TV as it actually happens. And, recaps are becoming more and more intricate. So much so that they're taking on lives of their own. In fact, you don't even have to watch some of the most popular TV shows. One simply reads the recap, and you get to enjoy everything about the episode — plus witty commentary — without giving up an hour of your life.
