This week, you worked your 40 hours, watched some World Cup, hit up a yoga class, and felt pret-ty accomplished. Well, Angelina Jolie, the mother of all one-uppers, just headed up a global summit on ending sexual violence and got a royal title from Queen Elizabeth II. No big deal.
As part of her birthday honors, the Queen made Jolie an honorary dame in recognition of her anti-rape campaign and other diplomatic services.
"To receive an honor related to foreign policy means a great deal to me, as it is what I wish to dedicate my working life to," Jolie said in a statement. "Working on PSVI [Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative] and with survivors of rape is an honor in itself. I know that succeeding in our goals will take a lifetime, and I am dedicated to it for all of mine."
Though Dame Angelina Jolie does have a nice ring to it, given her American heritage, the star's title is in name only. London-born actor Daniel Day-Lewis, however, has been upgraded to a knight. (That's Sir Daniel Day-Lewis, then.) Homeland actor Damian Lewis also earned an O.B.E. title, and Downton Abbey's Dame Maggie Smith has joined the exclusive Companions of Honour list.
Speaking of "companions of honor," Brad Pitt was on hand to celebrate his partner's good news. Now that's some advanced one-upping. (Guardian)
