Being Katherine Heigl Is Hard

Imagine being Katherine Heigl. After Knocked Up, she was Hollywood's go-to gal for romantic comedy leads. Now, Marie Claire UK is starting profiles about her with, "After quitting Hollywood back in 2009 to focus on her family..."

This cliché phrasing puts the ball squarely in Heigl's court. But, the *real* reason for Katherine Heigh's Hollywood sabbatical is one she's being forced to admit now that her hiatus is over. And, some mea culpas may be in order.

At the TCA event for her new TV show, NBC's State of Affairs, reporters asked Heigl to address what The Hollywood Reporter called "the exceptionally difficult behavior and demands" of both Katherine and her momager, who's also an executive producer on State of Affairs. "I certainly don’t see myself as being difficult. I would never intend to be difficult. I don’t think my mother sees herself as difficult...If I've ever disappointed anybody, it was never intentional," the actress said.

Well, no one will ever own up to wanting to be difficult, will they? This is a case where actions speak louder than words. Heigl earned that reputation for her readiness to denounce her most successful projects. In 2008, she called Knocked Up sexist and announced she wouldn't be submitting her Grey's Anatomy performance for an Emmy because the writing wasn't good enough.

Shade: You're throwing it, Katherine.

Heigl also blames her career slump/Hollywood shunning on her run of romantic comedies. "This thing that was my best friend for a long time suddenly turned on me...I was taken by surprise and angry at it for betraying me," she tells Marie Claire UK. She does take some of the onus, though. "[M]aybe I hit [romantic comedies] a little too hard. I couldn't say no...maybe I overloaded my audience."

Still, the actress wouldn't say no to doing a sequel for one of her more contentious rom-coms. She says her 27 Dresses co-star James Marsden was "literally spit-my-food-out kind of funny," and they "need to do a sequel to that!"

Maybe test the waters on State of Affairs before you and James go learning the lyrics to any more Elton John songs, Katherine. Just a tip from someone who likes romantic comedies, but doesn't like people who lack self-awareness. (Vulture)
