In mid-August, the 36-year-old Nebraska native, who had just wrapped work on Season 4 of Girls and the upcoming film The Intern, returned to his theater roots to shake his thing on stage as the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, replacing Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. To prepare, he watched lots of Tina Turner and Iggy Pop performance footage, and found a rather surprising inspiration for his take on Hedwig: Faye Dunaway in Network and Chinatown.
