No More Scatterbrain — Yoga Poses That Help Your Focus

Illustrated by Gabriela Alford.
In the Ayurveda tradition, fall is known as Vata season. When the wind picks up and we transition towards to winter, we can sometimes feel uncentered and unfocused. To bring your mind and body back to balance, yoga instructor Heidi Kristoffer recommends a few poses in Shape. These asanas can help guide you (and your concentration) during this hectic time of the year.
Don’t worry if you don’t regularly practice yoga: These poses are simple, effective, and designed for any level. For example, an easy seat paired with the Gyan mudra can bring your awareness into the present moment. To try it, begin by sitting with your legs crossed. Keep your spine long, and imagine that you're lifting the crown of your head to touch the ceiling. Now, rest your hands on your thighs with your palms facing upwards. Touch your index finger to your your thumb. Then, take 10 deep breaths, slowly inhaling and exhaling. Try not to think about what is still on your to-do list. If you're having trouble staying present, focus on the sound of your breath.
