When we think Vivienne Westwood, vivid images of pirate boots, dramatic silhouettes, and the occasional tiara come to mind. While the designer has certainly added embellishment to her collections, Westwood never abandoned her punk roots. In fact, they're still located at one particular London address: 430 Kings Road. That's where, in 1971, Westwood opened up shop alongside the late Malcolm McLaren, then-manager of the Sex Pistols, to explore what it meant to push these boundaries in art, culture, and fashion. Die-hard Westwood fans can take the pilgrimage to the U.K. and feast their eyes on limited-edition or vintage runway styles by the legendary designer at the Worlds End boutique. Or, as of February 9, they can go to their local Opening Ceremony.
Working with Westwood, OC (the purveyor of all things cool) brings some of the designer's groundbreaking, archived looks back to life — and, for the first time ever, to the U.S. The idea is to put forth a "culture-driven collection, with the aim to spread the word of positive activism," according to a press release. Sounds a lot like Westwood's original mission at Worlds End. This concept translates into unisex silhouettes (a recurring theme in Opening Ceremony collaborations as of late), patches, and slogans: details associated with punk fashion, reimagined for a 21st-century audience.
Don't forget: The last time someone dove into Vivienne Westwood's design history, we were blessed with a great meme. So, another stroll down Westwood-memory lane is bound to please. You can shop the Worlds End collection stateside — exclusively at Opening Ceremony boutiques in New York and Los Angeles, as well as online — starting next week. Until then, start planning your purchases (now that you're not springing for a round-trip flight to London).
