H&M's latest collection (due out fall '15) looks like the brand's take on Interstellar, but it's a lot different than the one that you saw with Matt and Anne. And, a lot less confusing. Rather than finding hospitable planets in other galaxies, the line is about transporting must-wear, cold-weather items from Earth to the Moon and beyond. Cue the intense movie-trailer voice: It's a world where you can wear chic ski suspenders in the city, where baseball hats are creatively bedazzled, and where cozy, versatile coats have asymmetrical closures.
Last night's show, which was heavily (albeit almost too heavily) themed "outer space," featured a runway that looked like the Moon, tunes that screamed "extraterrestrial," life-sized space ships (that housed bartenders and booze, we came to discover), and Caroline de Maigret as the fashion parade's opening astronaut. Seriously, she wore a silver jumpsuit and a helmet, and walked out holding a remote-control of some sort. But, amidst all the stunning, cinematic effects was the best part of all: really great clothes.
H&M seems to be toeing the line between daring people to take risks — with items like futuristic, knee-high moon boots and bright, ikat-print pants — and giving them what they already know they love — like chunky, knit turtlenecks and neoprene-and-patent-leather jackets. Every look in this collection is so wearable yet forward-thinking that we really would wear these clothes anywhere. Even Mars.
