When Lena Dunham stopped by Ellen to tape today's episode, she
made a pledge we've heard before, but it certainly bears repeating. She and
Jack Antonoff are not getting married until marriage is legal for everyone in
all 50 states.
"Well, it's something that…the idea of having a
celebration that can't be fully shared among all the people in my life and all
the people that we love just doesn't really feel like a celebration at
all," Dunham told Ellen, who married Portia de Rossi in 2008, just before California's
Prop 8 messed up that state's gay marriage ruling for a number of years.
"So, until that's something that everyone can join into with no sense of
being left out on any level — politically, emotionally — it's just not something
that we're gonna do."
Dunham first made this pledge back in October on Howard
Stern's show, citing the fact that her sister, Grace, is gay and still can't get
married anywhere she wants to. Maybe you're thinking this is such a Brad and Angelina move, but let us remind you that the fight isn't over yet. Currently, marriage equality exists in 37
states, while other states' bans are still being brought to the Supreme Court.
The Fun. guitarist and Girls creator have been dating for
almost three years now, so naturally everyone is playing nudgy mom and asking
her about getting hitched all the time lately. Clearly, they should
be asking her more about her role as Kinky Sue on this week's Scandal,
and what the heck acro-yoga is. Which, funny enough, is exactly what Ellen
asked her.
