Despite huge strides in recent years, the number of women making movies is still staggeringly low. According to Women Make Movies, in 2012 only 9% of directors working on the top 250 grossing films were women. In the 86 years the Academy has been handing out Oscars, only four women have been nominated for Best Director, and only Kathryn Bigelow has taken home the prestigious prize.
Things at the Tribeca Film Festival tends to be a little different — the international event always features a diverse roster of movies. This year, the headlines are all about the high number of female-directed films at the festival — 33% of the feature filmmakers are women, the highest number ever included at the event.
This might seems like small strides, but it's something. It's crucial women have a chance to step behind the camera and tell our stories.
Ahead, we've rounded up 11 movies from female directors that have screened at Tribeca over the past few years — and you can stream them all from the comfort of your couch. So hunker down and start watching. Maybe you'll get inspired to grab a camera and start making your own movies.
