Back in 1966, The Whitney's opening on the Upper East Side was monumental. Previously, the museum had been located in a tiny space connected to the MoMA, and a fire led to the search for a new and larger home. On Thursday, the inauguration of its new downtown location was just as unforgettable, and not just because Michelle Obama and Mayor Bill de Blasio were there for the ribbon cutting — at least partly for the fashionable denizens who came out to celebrate it.
The Renzo Piano-designed structure has been brewing anticipation in the Meatpacking District for the duration of its construction over the past few years, and the end result actually managed to live up to the hype. (As NYT art critic Roberta Smith explained, art just looks better here than it did in the old digs.)
On Saturday, we hit The Whitney Block Party to see what the fuss was all about and caught 18 New Yorkers fully embracing the city's spring weather. Believe us when we say the heady mix of the season's first sunshine and a creative crowd lends itself to some seriously cool looks.
